"Again and again [...] Galgut stages intimate dramas that have the force of ancient myth.” - Wall Street Journal

A modern family saga that could only have come from South Africa, written in gorgeous prose by Booker Prize winner Damon GalgutHaunted by an unmet promise, the Swart family loses touch after the death of their matriarch. Adrift, the lives of the three siblings move separately through the uncharted waters of South Africa. Reunited by four funerals over three decades, the dwindling family reflects the atmosphere of its country, one of resentment, renewal, and, ultimately, hope. The Promise is an epic drama that unfurls against the unrelenting march of national history.

Damon Galgut is a South African novelist and playwright. He was awarded the 2021 Booker Prize for his novel The Promise. He was previously shortlisted in 2003 and 2010 for the Booker Prize. He is also a keen traveller, obsessed with yoga, and writes longhand on notebooks before transferring anything to a computer.
