    Members' Supper

    Capitalism On Edge

    Thursday 16th Dicember, 7.00 - 8.30 pm

World renowned expert and Full Circle member shares her insights and knowledge.
Ask questions, challenge ideas (your own and other people’s) and meet other members, over a light supper.

Albena Azmanova claims that what ails the 99% is not inequality, but wide-ranging economic insecurity that has not spared the well-educated, the highly skilled, and well-paid individuals. An epidemic of precarity enabled the Covid-19 pandemic. Think about it, even the most affluent, scientifically advanced, and politically sophisticated Western societies are having such trouble coping with a virus that is neither completely unknown nor too deadly. Albena's book aims to contribute to the struggle for a better world. As U.S. economist James Galbraith put it, Capitalism on Edge is "the big-think book of our time".
    Come debate Albena's big idea.

Albena Azmanova is Professor of Political and Social Thought at the University of Kent's Brussels School of International Studies, a writer and political commentator. Her research spans issues of social justice, democracy, the critique of capitalism, and is animated by her political activism. She has been involved in the dissident movements that brought down the communist regime in her native Bulgaria and to this day remains engaged with transnational progressive social movements. Her latest book has received numerous awards.

        A salon with Roel Sterckx

        Thurs 17 Feb / Ideas / 6:30 - 8:30PM

Roel Sterckx shows us that to understand China today we must learn to think Chinese.

Never before has Chinese culture been so physically, digitally, economically or aesthetically present in everyday Western life. But how much do we really know about its origins and key beliefs? How did the ancient Chinese think about the world?

Sterckx looks at China's world of ideas and examines questions of leadership, social order, death, nature, and more. He reveals how these ideas shape contemporary China, from table manners at a traditional banquet, to the Chinese obsession with education and family, to the rhetoric of political leaders and the nation's grand strategy. The ancient Chinese have shaped the thinking of a civilization that is now influencing our own.

Roel Sterckx is a Flemish-British sinologist and anthropologist. Among the foremost experts in Chinese thought, he is Professor of Chinese History, Science, and Civilization at Cambridge University, and a fellow of Clare College. He has held previous posts at National Taiwan University, Wolfson College Oxford, and University of Arizona. He has authored several books on Chinese thought and ancient China, looking at philosophy, literature, history and food culture - helping us to understand the core ideas of Chinese civilisation.

        GOOD READS

          DO NOT DISTURB

          A salon with Michela Wrong

          Thu 17 Mar / Ideas / 6:30 - 8:30PM

One of the sharpest observers of African politics, Michela Wrong joins us to discuss her latest controversial work. Do Not Disturb is already contributing to a rethink about the nature of the regime in Rwanda as it puts uncomfortable questions about the country's track record into the public domain.

With her powerful investigation into a gruesome political murder and the authoritarian regime behind it, Michela upends the narrative that Rwanda sold the world after one of the deadliest genocides of the twentieth century.

Michela Wrong has been writing about Africa for the last 15 years, reporting for Reuters, the BBC and the Financial Times. She is the author of three non-fiction books on the continent and a novel. She was awarded the 2010 James Cameron prize for journalism that combined moral vision and professional integrity. Michela Wrong lives in London and is regularly interviewed by the main media outlets on her areas of expertise. She is also a consultant for the Miles Morland Foundation, which funds a range of literary festivals, workshops and scholarships for African writers, a trustee of the Africa Research Institute, and an advisor to the Centre for Global Development.

          GOOD READS

Do Not Disturb: The Story of a Political Murder and an African Regime Gone Bad (2020), Borderlines (2015), It's Our Turn To Eat (2009), I Didn't Do It For You: How the World Betrayed a Small African Nation (2005), In The Footsteps of Mr Kurtz: Living on the Brink of Disaster in Mobutu's Congo (2000).
