SUSIE ORBACH
IN THERAPY

Evening Salon / Mon 20 May / 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Worldwide, increasingly large numbers of people are seeing therapists on a regular basis - to address past traumas, to break patterns of behaviour, to confront eating disorders or addiction, to talk about relationships, or simply because we want to find out more about what makes us tick. Renowned psychotherapist and social critic Susie Orbach lifts the curtain on a notoriously mysterious and secretive process, revealing what really goes on in the consulting room. With over 40 years of experience as a psychotherapist, Susie refers to therapy as 'the struggle for truth'. But what is the 'talking cure' all about? Does it provide answers for everyone? Drawing on real stories, she attempts to explain how the process works, why it helps people, and whether it’s beneficial for everybody.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Susie Orbach is a renowned psychotherapist, psychoanalyst, writer and social critic. Her clinical practice is in London. The New York Times once called her the 'most famous psychotherapist to have set up couch in Britain since Sigmund Freud'. Her early work, Fat is a Feminist Issue, was groundbreaking in bringing the problems of women's relationships to their bodies and their eating to public consciousness. She campaigns vigorously for body diversity and against media pressure on girls to feel dissatisfied with their physical appearance. Susie Orbach has been a Visiting Scholar in New York, and at LSE in London for ten years. She was chair of the Relational School in the UK. She is the co-founder of Antidote, which works for emotional literacy, and co-founder of Psychotherapists and Counsellors for Social Responsibility. She lectures and broadcasts extensively world-wide.
