FRIDAY 1st December

5.15-6.15pm

[Catalyst Talk] For 14-19 yr olds

Peter Turchin: Saving Democracy

Democracy is becoming increasingly unstable, in Europe and across the world. Complexity scientist Peter Turchin argues that the clock is ticking as we near the point of political rupture. How can we make this world fairer for everyone, and bring prosperity and peace?

7.30-9pm

 [Ideas Salon]

Peter Turchin: End Times

The lessons of the world are clear, Turchin argues: when the equilibrium between ruling elites and the majority tips too far in favour of elites, political instability is all but inevitable. The choice is up to us, but the hour grows late.

Richard Fisher: How To Change The Way We See Time

How do you think about the future? Is it too far away for you to consider? Journalist and science writer Richard Fisher argues that the modern world has taken away our abilities to think long-term. Do you agree?

 4-5.30pm  [Ideas Salon]

Richard Fisher: Taking the Long View

How have modern-day technology and capitalism supercharged our short-termist tendencies and trapped us in the present at the mercy of reactive politics?

5-6pm

[Catalyst Talk] For 14-19 yr olds

Gaia Vince: How Climate Migration Will Reshape our World

Climate change is already changing our habitats, and people from the Global South are the first affected. How we manage the biggest case of mass migration we'll ever have to face is down to us.

6-7.30pm

 [Ideas Salon]

Gaia Vince: Nomad Century

In her ground-breaking book Nomad Century, Gaia Vince is setting the agenda for national conversation on one of the most pressing issues of our time.

8-9.30pm

 [Classical Concert]

Dars-Hoffman
:  Music for Resistance

'Resistance', the Hoffman-Dar's duo's debut album, looks at the charged feelings provoked by complex, painfully strong, and deeply human pieces, written by 20th century composers living under the Soviet Union and Third Reich.
Introduction on music and resistance by Heather Grabbe

William Sieghart:  Poetry Pharmacy

Sometimes only a poem will do. These poetic prescriptions and wise words of advice offer comfort, delight and inspiration for all; a space for reflection, and that precious realisation – I’m not the only one who feels like this

4-5pm

[Catalyst Talk] For 14-19 yr olds

Michèle Lamont: How Can We Heal A Divided World?

We're living in a divided world where everyone thinks their perception of the world is the right one. How do we build a more inclusive and tolerate society?

5-6.30pm
 [Ideas Salon]

Michèle Lamont: Seeing Others

Taking as her key insight the fact that recognition & inclusion are at least as important as income or power in assessing and reaching equality, Michèle Lamont unpacks the power of recognition - how others see us and value us - by drawing on nearly forty years of research and new interviews with young adults, cultural icons and change agents.
