From Pushkin to Putin, award-winning Russian contemporary writer Mikhail Shishkin treats us to a journey through Russian literary tradition, insights into the political climate and an exploration of dissent. Throughout Russia’s history, czars, general secretaries, and presidents bowed to the poets, hoping to derive from them spiritual legitimacy. Today’s Russia is a sad tale, brought into stark relief by its invasion of Ukraine. One that Shishkin is ready to address fearlessly. Years ago, when he pulled out of representing Russia in a major international literary event in the USA, his open protest provoked an outrage in an already polarised country. To this day, Shishkin lives out of Russia. Come meet him at Full Circle.

ABOUT

MIKHAIL SHISHKIN is one of the most prominent names in contemporary Russian literature.

Shishkin was born January 18, 1961 in Moscow, he worked as a school teacher and journalist. In 1995 he moved to Switzerland, where he worked as a Russian and German translator within the Immigration Department and specifically with Asylum Seekers.

Mikhail Shishkin is the only writer who received all the most important and prestigious Russia´s literary awards: the Russian Booker Prize (2000), The National Bestseller Prize (2006) and The Big Book Prize (2011). His books have been translated into 35 languages.”
