2pm - 3.30pm: Guided Historical and Architectural Walk

Brussels as a creative crucible

Enjoy a fascinating architectural walk around the Flagey ponds and area with charismatic historian Dr. Paul Snell. He will take you back in time to the Brussels from the pre-war Art Nouveau right through to the Art Déco and modernism of the 1930s.

3.30pm - 4.30pm

Come back to our beautiful House for a little break and cool down. Tea and cake and other hot and cold drinks will be available from the bar.

4.30pm - 6pm: Afternoon Salon Talk
Music and the Arts during
the Interwar Period in Brussels

In the afternoon, let Brussels-based conductor and scholar Luc Vertommen will take you on a musical journey back to the Roaring Twenties. Cultural life buzzes in Brussels and artists seek experimentation and the rise of new media. Luc tells the story of how he unlocked a forgotten repertoire from this period and draws parallels with other modern artists in Brussels like Ensor and Horta.

6pm - 7pm

Finish the day with a nice chat over a drink - our bar will be open.

Join us for a fascinating afternoon!

ABOUT

Dr. Paul Snell is a historian from the universities of Oxford and London. He has been based in Brussels for over ten years and fell in love with the city, frequently offering guided tours and visits with his Walkers and Talkers groups to explore various themes, areas, and exhibitions. He also ventures beyond Brussels, notably in Italy with tours in Florence, the Tuscan towns, Bologna, and Venice.

Dr. Luc Vertommen has immersed himself full-time in the world of band music as a brass teacher, player, conductor, arranger and writer. He conducts the Hauts-de-France Brass Band (France) and Brassband Rijnmond (Holland) and is head of music school in Deurne (Antwerp). He can be heard on more than 40 highly acclaimed CD recordings and obtained the International Buma Brass Award 2014 for his international work within the band movement. He recently unearthed many pages of original music by Belgian composers and his interest for the future is shown in his collaboration with many contemporary composers.
