The development, risks and opportunities posed by AI are the subject of much public debate and firmly on the policy agenda. It is clearly time for a coherent policy on digital governance, but what does this look like - and who can or should drive it?

Experienced ethics and technology professor argues that how we'll manage AI raises significant questions about our societies, our growing inequality, polarisation and the scope for transnational cooperation.

How will the EU's relative international leadership in this regard evolve? What do other guises of AI governance look like? Join us for the conversation.

ABOUT

Joanna Bryson is Professor of Ethics and Technology, at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin. She studies artificial and natural intelligence, with a view to improving the governance and ethics of digital technology.

With degrees in social and computer sciences from Chicago, Edinburgh and MIT, Bryson’s research appears in venues from reddit to Science, and she advises companies, governments, transnational agencies, and NGOs globally, particularly in AI policy. From 2002-19 she was on the Computer Science faculty at the University of Bath, has also been affiliated with the Department of Psychology at Harvard University, the Department of Anthropology at the University of Oxford, the School of Social Sciences at the University of Mannheim and the Princeton Center for Information Technology Policy. Since July 2020, Joanna has been one of nine experts nominated by Germany to the Global Partnership for Artificial Intelligence.
