Isabella Weber argues that in our age of overlapping emergencies - climate, migration, pandemics, regional wars - threats to supply chains are becoming commonplace. Each threat brings the risk of inflation and the potential for some companies to make enormous profits while many workers face enduring hardship, even in full time work. Such shocks risk destabilising governments and societies. We need new means of protecting our society and democracy. Come and hear Isabella Weber's plans for how to do it.

Political economist Isabella Weber is Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Massachusetts, an Associate in Research at Harvard University, and a Fellow of the OSF Ideas Workshop. She works on policy responses to inflation and has advised policymakers in the US and Germany on price stabilization measures. She is seen as one of 2024 top thinkers, however she has also challenged economic orthodoxies and the economic establishment has previously called her ideas were called 'perverse' and 'certainly wrong' by the economic establishment. Until in February 2022, Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Suddenly, with energy prices spiralling, policymakers started taking Weber’s work seriously: around the world they imposed price caps or new regulation in response to surging costs. . Her next book, ESSENTIAL: Inflation, Profits and Survival in an Age of Emergencies, will be published in 2026, and will be translated into seven languages. Her book How China Escaped Shock Therapy: The Market Reform Debate won several prizes and award, and entered many best book lists of 2021. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, Financial Times, Washington Post, the Guardian, Project Syndicate, die ZEIT and Süddeutsche Zeitung.
