In this talk, Stephane Detournay will take you on a guided tour through some of the most gripping theories in physics: from Galileo and Newton to Einstein, Hawking and beyond; all of which led to the discovery of black holes. What are they? Can we observe them, and how? Can black holes really destroy everything that they encounter? Why is it believed that they hold the key to the mysteries of quantum gravity? All of these challenging questions, some of which have been answered only recently and some others which remain unsolved, will be addressed in this engaging evening of intelligent discussion.
Please note that this is an online only event.

ABOUT
Stéphane Detournay is a FNRS research associate and professor at Université Libre de Bruxelles and the International Solvay Institutes. He was the holder of a Marie Curie Fellowship, is a honorary BAEF alumni, and received the 2016 Adolphe Wetrems Prize from the Belgian Royal Academy of Science. He held postdoctoral positions at the University of Milan, the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at UCSB and at Harvard University. His research interests lie in the area of high-energy and gravitational physics, with particular focus on quantum aspects of black holes. He is also interested in outreach, in establishing connexions between arts and sciences, and hosts a series of events in Brussels called Science&Cocktails.
