A BURNS SUPPER WITH A DIFFERENCE
featuring Laverock

Music - Social / Thurs 25th Jan / 7.30 - 10.30 pm

Not so much a Burns Supper as an opportunity to experience afresh the true genius of Scotland’s national poet - free from the shortbread box cliches with which he is ordinarily associated.

Robert Burns was a man of his times, a man with his own inner contradictions, above all, a man whose central message is intuitively understood by all people everywhere and always: true nobility is not a question of rank, but of an essential humanity, which we all of us share regardless.

Laverock have set some of his less familiar poems and songs to original melodies of their own composition. Each, in its way, illustrates a different aspect of the poet’s temperament and insight.

BURNS NIGHT SUPPER

MacSween's haggis, neeps and tatties will be served with traditional accompaniments (to dinner ticket holders) during the evening which will be completed by poetry recitals and of course live music from the inimitable Laverock.

Please note that dinner is only available to our prepaid dinner ticket holders.

Our pay bar will be open all evening to all.

ABOUT THE BAND

Laverock are a Scots folk group marrying harmony vocals with guitar accompaniment, through a repertoire of lesser-known Robert Burns songs set to original melodies.

Laverock seek to uncover the real Robert Burns and the heart of his legacy: the beauty of nature, the bliss of love, the warmth of companionship. Laverock share with Burns the desire to dignify the Scots tongue, evoking a respect for its vigorous directness through the medium of song.

Born in France to a Danish mother and a Scottish father, Alex Smith brings a fresh, outside-in approach to Scots traditional music. A singer-songwriter with a background in blues and rock, he is greatly inspired by the work of Robert Burns.

Lanarkshire-born vocalist Joanne O'Donnell’s long-standing love of the Scots tongue of her childhood inform her passion for Burns' work. Her vocals express the simple emotions captured in the poetry.

Originally from Liverpool, Andy Upton has focussed his skills on acoustic guitar. His ear for intricate and delicate arrangements gives Laverock its unique melodic personality.
