Modify your diet, and reduce animal products

"The more you can cut down on animal products, especially beef, that is the single biggest action for biodiversity and it is a really powerful climate action."

    Kimberly Nicholas

Modifying your diet to reduce animal products is one of the most effective personal climate actions because the livestock sector is a disproportionate driver of global greenhouse gas emissions, land degradation, and biodiversity loss.

Raising livestock requires immense amounts of land and water. Over 75% of global agricultural land is used for livestock grazing and growing animal feed. Furthermore, producing one kilogram of beef requires approximately 15,000 litres of water, compared to a kilogram of vegetables that requires ~300 litres.

Try to reduce or even cut out animal products from your diet. The Planetary Health Diet can provide you a framework with which to modify how you eat.

For cheaper shopping and a stronger community, form a co-op

"Having social connections to people helps us remain grounded in the reality of other people's lives"

    Sarah Stein Lubrano

Amongst her research and wider work, Sarah Stein Lubrano is also a mutual-aid coordinator and member of a food co-operative. She emphasises that while it can be fun and make food cheaper, it is also a tool that forces people to know their neighbours, understand shared localised issues, and build diverse friendships that actively reduce social prejudice.

Knock on the doors of your immediate neighbours to set up a cooperative bulk-ordering network. This allows households to secure significantly cheaper groceries through shared material organisation while building community.

Become a storyteller about your environment

Make it an individual mission to record and speak openly about what existed, what has vanished, and what can still be saved. Document local ecosystems to pass that baseline knowledge to friends, family, and future generations who will otherwise might not have the memory of what a healthy ecosystem looked like.

    Be more humble

"I think we have to be a lot more humble. There's a righteousness in our side of politics... sometimes we have to say some of the things we do don't work and are counterproductive."

    Nick Lowles

In his many years of anti-racist campaigning and community action, Nick Lowles points out the need to replacing self-righteousness with humility to build genuine, lasting community resilience. This approach breaks down political barriers, prevents radicalisation, and fosters solidarity by turning organisers from lecturers into collaborative partners.

    Protest peacefully for our world

"Inspiring cultural change to support climate action... we know that mindset shifts and norm shift are fundamental and essential to making the big changes we need."

    Kimberly Nicholas

Protesting forces climate issues onto the political agenda, blocks high-emission infrastructure projects, and fundamentally shifts corporate behaviour through public pressure. Additionally, it helps to shift personal action, making people more cognisant of their actions and choices. This is essential for change on an individual and structural level.

Make third spaces your first priority

"A lack of third spaces is causing the shrivelling of our social worlds."

    Sarah Stein Lubrano

Third spaces (distinct from your home and work) are essential parts to building communities that are collaborative, thriving, and resilient. These spaces include, but are not limited to, parks, cafes, libraries, bars, and community centres. Existing and thriving third spaces are important for democracy, civic engagement, and help to provide sense of place in communities of all sizes and compositions.

Start using existing spaces within your community that provide a space that is distinct from home and work. Re-envision standard commercial locations like your neighborhood meeting spaces into local co-working spaces or organising centers that host active meetings regarding labor, community safety, or workplace concerns.

Use renewable electricity in your home

The Green Tariff (Easiest): Switch your existing electricity provider to a 100% certified renewable tariff. You keep your existing utility infrastructure, but your provider guarantees that every megawatt-hour you use is backed by European Guarantees of Origin (GOs) from wind, solar, or hydro generation

Community Energy (Medium): If you rent an apartment or cannot install solar panels, you can become part of a local energy community. Under EU rules, citizens have a legal right to produce, consume, and share renewable energy. You buy a small share in a regional wind or solar project and get credited on your bill.

On-Site Generation (Highest Impact): Install rooftop solar panels or a heat pump. This transitions your home into a self-sustaining green power plant and permanently eliminates domestic gas reliance.

Challenge the language you and others use in political discourse

"How we communicate is how we organise our society."

    Emmanuel Achiri

Pay attention to how language constructs meaning, shapes reality, influences identities, and establishes power dynamics. Surrounding discourse around migration, how and when are terms like illegal migrants and aliens used in policy, journalism, and by politicians. Challenge the language you use, that mirrors these reductive and often problematic labels. It may seem like insignificant, but the language you choose guides how we communicate, and in turn, how we organise our societies.

Cut down or cut out flying

"Flying is the largest part of our climate footprint by far."

    Kimberly Nicholas

Cutting down or cutting out flying is one of the most powerful personal climate actions you can take. Aviation is incredibly carbon-intensive per passenger-kilometer, and it is a disproportionate driver of global heating. Amidst geopolitical tensions, fuel-shortages, and mass flight cancellations, cutting down or cutting out flying has never been more incentivised. Your consumer choice can help to drive industry action.

    Befriend people outside your echo-chamber

"We have to have friends who are different from us to become less prejudiced. This is hugely political, our friends are so important and unfortunately we have less than ever before."

    Sarah Stein Lubrano

Intentionally seek out and maintain close personal friendships with individuals from entirely different backgrounds, educational profiles, racial demographics, and political perspectives. Dr. Sarah Stein Lubrano identifies diverse friendships as essential political infrastructure and cognitive protection, arguing they act as a safeguard against cultish radicalisation and reduce prejudice. She emphasises that relational, deep friendships outside one’s comfort zone are necessary to rewire empathy and drive collective political action.
